I come from many different aspects of music: Fan first and foremost, Band Manager, Musician. I listen to it all from Lady Gaga to Whitechapel and everything in between. Except for Elvis Presley even if my family is related to him.
In the music business, you only have 30 seconds to catch that A&R Rep's attention. 30 seconds. Not a lot of time but its basically the most crucial 30 seconds of an unsigned musician/artist. Make those 30 seconds count.
So here goes:
1) As a guitarist, I look for those grooves in the music. Doesn't necessarily have to be super fast, its just got to catch the attention of the listener. You make them grooves stand out.
2) As a musician, I tend to listen to the relationship between the guitarist and the drummer. This is where the nucleus of the band resides. If this is very clear and present, you have some amazing music.
3) As a fan, i listen to the band a s a whole and see if i can relate to the music. Does it catch my attention? How does it make me feel? Would I want to see this band live?
4) As a manager, I look for the marketability of the band or musician. Does this band have what it takes to survive in the industry?
That being said, I take all these in consideration when listening to each artist. Its a tough business to get into. And even tougher to find someone to listen to your music. I find the Unsigned Countdown to be possibly one of the greatest things to come along. If I don't like something, I listen to my boys on the Show (Jason, Tony, Derek) and their point of view opens doors that I wasn't even thinking about.
Thanks for reading.
